Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Reviews

Nicholas B, 09 May 2019

Just to say thanks to Jane for delivering the course in a sensitive and supportive manner. Clearly, we covered quite a lot of content in a short space of time and this runs the risk of not having time to explore in depth and look at the interrelationships between issues. If anything, I think the morning session provided a few more opportunities to discuss ideas in pairs and groups- I think these types of activities can be very productive and feel more inclusive.

There were opportunities for us to checkour actions in examples from our own experience as well as case studies.

This course was very informative and useful not only in how to approach supporting a young person in a crisis situation, but in more general understanding and information around mental health. One comment I would say is that the intersection between mental health and gender identity/transgender people was not mentioned in the course or materials provided. There is a high suicide rate for transgender individuals and young people exploring gender identity or identifying as transgender/non-binary may be at increased risk, but the materials don't mention this at all - it's something to explore and develop for the future please! (Also wider LGBTQ+ intersections with mental health, as many of the young people I work with would benefit from their staff being knowledgeable about these risks and how best to support)
